Giant beer tanks made in Bavaria for Nigeria

Spectacular handling of heavy cargo for Krones at bayernhafen Regensburg

Spectacular handling of heavy cargo at bayernhafen Regensburg – on Monday morning three giant tanks were loaded onto an inland barge for the drinks bottling and packaging plant manufacturer Krones AG. The tanks, which are each 16.5 metres long and weigh around 15 tonnes, are destined to be used for fermenting and storing beer in the West African country of Nigeria. The precise loading of the megatanks onto the inland barge was undertaken by two port cranes on the north quay of the west port operating in tandem, which is where two cranes work together to lift a cargo which needs to be moved. This heavy cargo handling was organised by DTU Donau-Transport-und Umschlaggesellschaft mbH, a joint venture between Kühne+Nagel Deutschland and Main-Schifffahrts-Genossenschaft MSG which is based at the Port of Regensburg.

The large tanks begin their journey by inland barge to Antwerp, which is situated around 1,200 kilometres away. The journey by barge up to the Belgian North Sea port will take about a week; from here the journey will then continue by sea to Nigeria. The tanks, which are destined for SABMiller, were manufactured by Krones AG in Neutraubling and brought to Regensburg's west port around 10 kilometres away on a low-loader trailer. Krones AG offers technologies covering every aspect of the production, bottling and packaging of drinks. The market leader, whose headquarters are in Neutraubling, also works all around the world as a specialist in kitting out breweries.

bayernhafen Regensburg, which forms part of the bayernhafen Group, is the public inland port which handles the most cargo for transport by boat along the River Danube. With its efficient infrastructure, the port offers ideal facilities for handling bulk and heavy cargos. The spectrum ranges from construction machinery and wind turbines through to transformers and entire factories. Loads weighing up to 80 tonnes can be handled by the port's own cranes. At the heavy cargo loading site, it is possible to employ an external 1,000 tonne mobile crane. Last year, almost 7.4 million tonnes of cargo were moved through bayernhafen Regensburg by river, rail and road. The around 90 companies which are based at the port provide jobs for approx. 2,000 people.
